A close friend of ours began a travel blog a few years back in Bucharest, Romania of all places. Bucharest was not exactly “on the map” as a tourist destination, however there was a large handful of local “expats” that could make up a good bit of the readership on this website (travel blog). Bucharest Expat began as a “modest” collection of conversational style articles about the “day in the life” of an expat in Bucharest. You know… something you would read and feel as though you are having a conversation about expat life in Bucharest… hence the name Bucharest Expat. Well, Bucharest Expat begin to grow. One reader turned in to three, three readers turned in to ten, and so on down the line. Bucharest Expat went from its’ beginning as a “free” blog created on the WordPress content management system. WordPress is simple to get set up with, and there are many, many FREE “templates” to begin with to give your blog that “professional” look and feel. As the readership grew and as the content and articles began to add up on Bucharest Expat, they began seeking alternative ways of delivering this information (and orginasation) which I’ll talk about more in the MEMBERS AREA of Home Sweet Earth. As you look at this travel blog (turned website) today, you see what is one of the finest examples of a expat related travel resource in all of Eastern Europe. The blog has been featured in many local and regional media outlets, and brings in between 8,000 – 10,000 Unique visitors a month with traffic around 600,000 hits per month as well. Bucharest Expat is now going through the ever-so-important phase of monetization wherein advertisements from local venues will be properly positioned as well as additional lucrative income streams we discuss in our MEMBERS AREA.
All in all, travel writing is something that, with a new 21st century twist, can be as profitable as ever. There are keys to success in this business that, if applied incorrectly, will lead to depressing failure…. or you will be travel writing just for fun. Travel writing and writing for travel blogs is not easy, but it is relatively “simple” once understood. Take the time to read through our resource here and become part of our members area. If you have questions feel free to contact me and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability.
